In History, Birch have been learning all about the North East and its links to coal mining. We had a talk from Mr Walker, who discussed how his family members were miners and the different jobs they did. We also found out that some children had relatives who had also been miners. Birch were miners for the afternoon. The scene was set…we had our Davy lamps and of course a bird to check it was safe down there!
There was lots of coal in the mine which needed to be collected and then the children needed to find a tool to help them break down the coal wall to escape! We had so much fun recreating a mine and crawling through the dark spaces. We had a challenge at the end of the mine where they needed to take photos of themselves.
We also made some cookies which we all really enjoyed when they cooled down! Phew what a busy day!!!
